Hydraulics
While the hydraulic power pack is relatively maintenance free, regular replacement of the oil and oil filter will prevent system failure. More specifically, the servo valves are very sensitive to burnt or contaminated oil.
The most common failure is due to excessive wear of the valve and clean oil will greatly reduce the possibility of wear.
If the simulator is used faily, we recommend changing the oil and filter once a year. While this many seem often, it can prevent expensive valve failure and down time. PMP offers an exchange program for Moog servo valuves whereby a re-conditioned valve is supplied in exchange for a worn or defective valve. Please
contact us for details.
Also, the oil cooler located on the oil tank is a very important part of the system and should be kept clean and unobstructed to allow a good airflow.

Mechanics
The rod end bearing and the cartridge bearing that is located respectively at the top and bottom of each cylinder should be checked regularly.
Most machines are fitted with heavy duty versions of these bearings and should last at least a year. Beacause these bearings connect the main driving force (the cyliners) to the motion base, 'play' in these bearings results in excessive wear and strain on the whole motion base. This in turn leads to expensive hinge and universal joint repairs. If you hear knocking noises while the machine is in motion, it is time to inspect the motion base.
Remember that not only will your clients hear this disturbing knocking sound, the shocks that are being generated are going into the capsule, which in turn, causes damage to components like the door hinge system, capsule structure, projector shock mounting frame, mirror and screen.

Capsule
Over the years, various methods have been used to fix the screen in position. In our experience, it is worth checking to see if the fixtures are still solid.
We have seen capsules whereby the retaining screws have worked loose and this eventually results in damaging an expensive rear projection screen.
Likewise, the projector-mounting frame should be checked to ensure that the vibration isolation feet are still in good condition.
The door rubber not only keeps out light, it also assists in 'holding' the door while the machine is in motion. Timely replacement can prevent door hinge and suction cup damage.

Electronics
Follow our advice on cleaning, cooling and the effect of humidity on electronics.
Often installed in less than ideal locations, the Venturer control cabinet should receive regular attention and maintenance to ensure trouble free and reliable operation.
Regular calibration of the control and feeback electronics will prevent the system from overdriving the servos.
Every civil power supply in the world is slightly different and to ensure correct operation, calibration 'on site' and in the machines' operating environment is essential.

Tips
Did you know that the Sony CRV player has its own cleaning mechanism? If you remove the disk and power the player off, and then switch on the machine without a disk inserted, the reading head travels under a cleaning brush! After the cleaning, the disk can be reinserted and normal operation will resume.
Great care should be taken when cleaning the disk itself. This is a professional video storage medium. Only special cleaning fluids and cloth may be used to remove dust on the disk.
